If you’re like those of us here at LRLT you might be wondering where the first part of 2015 went, but here it is already March & that means one thing: National Agriculture Week! LRLT teams up with a diverse group of other non-profits, government agencies, industry groups & volunteers to spread the word about agriculture & it’s importance in our valley one week each March. Despite our rural setting, it’s easy for our community to forget about agriculture & where our food comes from (hint: it’s not magically manufactured by Saveway) or to assume that agriculture is simply cows & hay, as that’s what we raise the most of here in Central Idaho.
So how do we spread the word far & wide during Ag Week? By the end of the day next Thursday, every classroom in every school in Lemhi County will have been visited by a group giving an Ag Week presentation. The topics vary wildly from grade to grade & will include everything from livestock identification to soils to plants to bees to beef cattle production. But that’s not all, there are coloring packets made available to all the preschools & day care centers & story hour at the library. So what about the general public, how can you get involved? There’s a self guided tour along Highway 93, radio games on KSRA & Facebook trivia going on all week. Monday is the Salmon FFA Chapter’s annual spring feed fundraiser, with a petting zoo at ValleyWide on Friday & possibly the most popular event of all: the FREE drive through breakfast! We’ll start serving breakfast burritos in the lot across from McPherson’s & go until 9 a.m. or the burritos are all gone, which usually happens long before 9 a.m., so don’t be late!
