Hi everybody! My name is Hannah Alverson and I grew up in Eugene, OR. I attend Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA where I am double majoring in Spanish and Environmental Studies- Biology. The Environmental Studies department at Whitman sponsors several internships every year, and I was lucky enough to get a summer internship working with Lemhi Regional Land Trust and Salmon Valley Stewardship.
I attended a Forb Palatability workshop two weeks ago through Idaho Fish and Game. We went around the room and introduced ourselves, saying our name, job, and “what we really do.” That last question really got me thinking- what do I really do as an intern for LRLT and SVS?
When I say “I monitor land easements,” I really mean that “I wander around with a GPS in hand bushwhacking my way to photo points.”
“I go out with the range crew” aka “I’m learning to identify bushes, grasses, and forbs.”
“I’m working on a baling twine recycling project” aka “I work on tracking down large bins for the twine, do public outreach, and research the devastating impacts of baling twine.”
“I help with stream restoration projects” aka “I get to use hay hooks to move super heavy sedge mats and muck around in the mud.”
I’ve been in Salmon for a month and so far I am really enjoying living and learning in this wonderful valley. I’m excited to see what the last month of my internship has in store!
